About Indian Institute of Petroleum

Established in 1959, the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) is a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), dedicated to research and development in the hydrocarbon sector. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas in Dehradun, IIP has been at the forefront of developing technologies that enhance the efficiency, sustainability, and environmental compatibility of petroleum refining and utilization.

Our mission is to provide innovative technological solutions to the Indian petroleum industry, reduce import dependence, and promote the use of cleaner and sustainable energy sources. With over 300 scientists, engineers, and technical staff, IIP operates with state-of-the-art pilot plants and analytical facilities.

IIP's research portfolio spans conventional petroleum refining, catalyst development, lubricants, biofuels, gas-to-liquid technologies, and emission control. We have successfully developed and commercialized more than 100 technologies, benefiting both public and private sector oil companies in India and abroad.

Our Core Research Areas

IIP conducts multidisciplinary R&D across the entire hydrocarbon value chain, from crude oil evaluation to advanced fuel formulations.

Petroleum Refining

Developing advanced processes for crude distillation, catalytic cracking, hydrocracking, and catalytic reforming to maximize yield and product quality. Research focuses on energy integration, residue upgradation, and low-carbon footprint refining.

Catalyst Development

Design, synthesis, and testing of novel heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts for refining, petrochemicals, and emission control. Expertise in zeolites, supported metals, and nano-catalysts for selective transformations.

Alternative & Renewable Fuels

Pioneering research in biofuels (biodiesel, bioethanol, sustainable aviation fuel), synthetic fuels from biomass & waste, hydrogen production, and fuel cells. Developing pathways for carbon-neutral energy carriers.

Lubricants & Specialties

Formulation of high-performance lubricants, greases, and specialty products for automotive, industrial, and aerospace applications. Focus on biodegradability, extended drain intervals, and extreme condition performance.

Environmental Technologies

Development of processes for desulfurization, denitrification, VOC abatement, wastewater treatment, and CO2 capture/utilization. Lifecycle analysis and environmental impact assessment of energy systems.

Analytical & Characterization

State-of-the-art instrumentation for detailed hydrocarbon analysis, molecular characterization, catalyst testing, and fuel performance evaluation. Includes GC×GC, FT-ICR MS, NMR, and advanced rheometry.
